Jamil Hellu's solo exhibition (runs through June 18th) uses still and moving images to investigate how we determine relationships to cultural histories and personal narratives, with a focus on Jamil's Syrian roots and Arab ethnicity. All Ways Lead To The Mill is inspired by a Syrian proverb about how different paths lead to the same destination.

Flexible Horizons: The Body in Transit

What does it mean to live in the slash of a binary; male/female, gay/straight? FLEXIBLE HORIZONS; the body in transit is a curated group show that describes the end of “normal.” The exhibit explores the intersection of class, race and gender within the body-individual-community—through portraits, performance, experimental films and discussion. Exhibit runs through July 29 and features more events; check links for details. Opening night features the Oakland premiere of Criminal Queers, a film that visualizes a radical trans/queer struggle against the prison industrial complex and toward a world without walls, imagining what spaces might be opened up if crowbars, wigs and metal files become tools for transformation.

"A Tough Act To Follow" follows some of the experiences of Sampson McCormick (Sampson) an internationally touring, black, LGBT stand up comic and writer, who navigates the already difficult business, as well as many of the added hurdles and setbacks with a few tears, heartfelt honesty, admirable determination and lots of humor. The film focuses on homophobia, sexism and sometimes racism and other challenges that affect the level of visibility of minorities in comedy houses, television, on stage, media and other opportunities to work in the entertainment business. Pintishkannovt nantahaat katihmi? (What Happened to Little Mouse?), is a multidisciplinary theatrical production exploring Native American and Two-Spirit (LGBT) identity through non-verbal interpretations of Chickasaw myths utilizing traditional masks, pantomime and live music. Local drag performer and Two-Spirit artist, Landa Lakes, takes you on a journey with Little Mouse as she explores the ancient world of Southeastern Tribal origin stories. Storyteller, J Miko Thomas (Chickasaw), based these characters on nearly-forgotten oral stories passed down through generations and weaves them into one adventure. Along with fellow queer artist Peter Griggs, Thomas sets the mood in this world with sounds and percussion.

Nigga-Roo: looks closely at Black identity internalized racism, colorism and the impact of oppression on the Black psyche. Dazié Grego-Sykes is known for performing multidisciplinary work that cuts through rhetoric and directly into human emotion. This has led to a style that is consistently described as being “in your face” and “unapologetic.” The on going question I ask myself developing this work is “what would I say about race if I were unafraid of who was listening?” The result is an hour long production that looks deeply into the collective consciousness of Black Folk.
